Three Simple Winning Mindsets in Chess, Business, and Life

September 20, 2017 By Andy Leave a Comment

Going “upstream” is a great way to adjust and reorient ourselves for lasting change and from a business perspective, lasting results.

Mindsets are essentially collections of thought that influence behavior and our experience in life and business.

When we improve our mind “sets” with conscious intentionality, we can arrive at our goals more efficiently, with increased awareness, and accelerated speed.

Chess is a wonderful “game” to exercise and strengthening our mindset potentials.

The three primary mindsets I’ve found to be uncannily related to business growth and personal development are thusly…

  1. relentless faith in a long-term vision,
  2. clear, focused determination,
  3. productive, effective execution.

But there is a lot more to the picture.

The internal attitude towards progressing forward is an essential prerequisite for the above mindsets to be effective.

Let us explore some other crucial building blocks to constructing effective, growth oriented mindset strategies…

Courage and Confidence

Having courage and solid confidence builds the determination needed to execute. The most important aspect to courage and confidence is deploying the action without hesitation.

Have you ever played a bullet chess game?

Clarity and Certainty

Having certainty influences faith without doubt. Another critical aspect to keeping narrow, lean, and focused is being able to stick to the plan even when the water gets real muddy like.

Honesty and Productivity

Honesty keeps you grounded and out of denial, over-thinking, and self-doubt.

In order to effectively deploy kick-awesome action (being productive), you gotta be honest with weak areas in your repertoire and have a plan to do something about it. One thing I consistently see in other people is that they are quick to point fingers at weakness, but not so quick in pivoting into the pain, struggle, and frustration to grow.

Honesty ties these all together. You gotta have conscious effort to monitor faith and your determination to get it done. And when you get off course, you gotta get back on it!

These developed beliefs push the needle forward. These are collections of thoughts that are highly influenced by our upbringing, societal influences, childhood inferences, and future projections/judgements.

The good news is that mindsets are 100% malleable, flexible, and subjective. This means they can be changed. All that is needed is the desire to do so.

The End-Game

Having a plan, a solid foundation, and being proactive is essential to executing effectively. Having the “end” in mind is a great way to start your path.

If you feel without a doubt you are doing the right thing, intuitively, logically, irrationally that your strategy is the right thing, your obstacles are likely more in your head than in reality. Energy goes where you direct it so if you focus on these things of faith, determination, and you are honest about it, you can shift your attitude to gratitude and begin to exercise these growth mindsets.

And chess is a wonderful mental simulation to strengthen or oftentimes activate the dormant mindsets.

The next move is yours.
